Worldwide, it is estimated that almost 1.3 million people die in road crashes every year and a further 50 million are injured. In order to address this major health crisis, the UN has declared 2011–2020 as the Global Decade of Action for Road Safety. This officially commences today, the 11th May, 2011.
To launch the occasion, members of ARRB’s Board and research staff held a launch event at ARRB’s headquarters in the Australian Road Research Centre in Vermont South, Melbourne.
Principal Research Scientist, Mr Blair Turner, presented about the issues, actions and commitments to achieve substantial progress with reducing road trauma during the Decade of Action.
Similarly, following from ARRB and the Australasian College of Road Safety (ACRS) convening a roundtable discussion on 3 March, 2011 to plan commitments and action for the Decade of Action, ARRB also participated in the national launch of the Decade of Action in Canberra by the Hon Catherine King MP, the Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport and Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing.
ARRB’s Safe Systems staff also participated in local events in Brisbane, Sydney and Perth.
To demonstrate its commitment to the Decade of Action, ARRB has signed the Global Road Safety Commitment and it will continue to implement the five pillars of the Decade of Action within Australia and internationally.
